Tiivistelmä: The Nationally valuable aeolian sand and littoral deposits dataset is based on the final report of the joint project Inventory of valuable aeolian sand and littoral deposits (TUURA) of the Ministry of the Environment, Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the Geological Survey of Finland (Mäkinen et al. 2011). The dataset includes information on 417 aeolian sand and littoral deposits classified as nationally valuable. The objective of the TUURA project was to make a comprehensive inventory of Finland’s aeolian sand and littoral deposits and, based on environmental values, to produce a uniform classification of such formations. This was primarily undertaken to meet permit consideration needs pursuant to the Land Extraction Act (555/1981) and for other land use planning. The study assesses aeolian sand and littoral deposits on the basis of their geological, biological and landscape-related characteristics. The assessment was performed nationwide, excluding Åland. During a pre-selection process, almost 1,100 formations were chosen and, of these, an on-site assessment was done of 697 formations. In connection with the on-site assessment, formations were given points based on their geological, biological and landscape factors. The value of a formation was primarily decided on the basis of the point value accorded to the geological factor. However, the point value of the biological and landscape factors may have influenced the value classification of each formation, by raising its classification by one or two grades. On the basis of the on-site assessment, a total of 417 formations are classified as nationally valuable. These are divided into value categories as follows: some 20 formations are of high national value (value category 1), 45 formations are nationally very valuable (value category 2), 129 are nationally valuable (value category 3) and 223 are nationally significant (value category 4). The total area of nationally valuable aeolian sand and littoral deposits is 69,942 hectares. The assessed formations are found throughout the country, but are clearly concentrated in the Kainuu region, northern parts of North Ostrobothnia, and South-Western Lapland, both in inland areas and on coasts. A list of nationally valuable formations is appended to the publication (Annex 1). Given the extensive volume of the assessment material, descriptions of individual formations and map printouts are presented according to the territories of the former regional environment centres, and are available on the DVD attached to the final report. The results of the inventory can be utilised not only in decisions on permit applications for extraction of earth materials and in land use planning, but also for environmental protection and education purposes. The results also provide a basis for assessing geological and biological diversity. The study does not constitute a nature conservation programme, nor does the publication have any direct legal impacts. Reference: Mäkinen, K., Teeriaho, J. - MuodTunnus: A 10 digit ID code for a site. Three first digits indicate the dataset code (TUU), two next digits (01 -13) after hyphen indicate previously responsible local environmental centres (presently ELY-centres), last three digits are specific number series as per Local Environmental Centre. E.g. site number TUU-02-002 is under administration of Lounais-Suomen Environmental Centre (now ELY-centre of Varsinais-Suomi.
